Longewala War Memorial

The Longewala War Memorial is one of the most important historical places to visit near Jaisalmer. Located in the Thar Desert close to the India–Pakistan border, the memorial commemorates the bravery and sacrifice of Indian soldiers during the Battle of Longewala in the 1971 India–Pakistan War. It is a meaningful destination for visitors interested in Indian military history, patriotism and the stories behind one of the most famous battles fought in Rajasthan.

History of Longewala War Memorial
The Battle of Longewala took place during the night of 4–5 December 1971. The Longewala post was held by soldiers of the 23 Punjab Regiment, commanded by Major Kuldip Singh Chandpuri. Pakistani forces advanced towards the post with a much larger force that included soldiers, tanks and artillery. Despite being heavily outnumbered, the Indian defenders decided to hold their position rather than abandon the post. The situation changed dramatically after sunrise on 5 December, when Indian Air Force Hunter aircraft operating from Jaisalmer attacked the advancing Pakistani forces. According to Rajasthan Tourism, the aircraft of 122 Squadron flew 18 sorties and destroyed numerous tanks and vehicles, helping stop the Pakistani advance.

The battle became an important example of courage, determination and effective coordination between the Indian Army and Indian Air Force. Major Kuldip Singh Chandpuri was later awarded the Maha Vir Chakra for his leadership during the battle. The story of Longewala was also popularised through the Hindi film Border, although the real battle remains an important part of India's military history. Today, the memorial provides visitors with an opportunity to learn about the battle and pay respect to the soldiers who defended the country. Military exhibits, photographs, memorial structures and preserved equipment help visitors understand the events of 1971.

Best Time to Visit Longewala War Memorial
The best time to visit Longewala is generally October to March, when the weather in the Thar Desert is more comfortable for travelling. Winter mornings and afternoons are particularly suitable for a long road trip from Jaisalmer.
Summer can be extremely hot, with strong sunlight and high temperatures, so travelling during the cooler months is more comfortable. If visiting during summer, start early and carry sufficient drinking water.
A morning departure is recommended because Longewala is a considerable distance from Jaisalmer and the journey can take several hours. The memorial's published timings can vary between sources; Rajasthan Tourism currently lists 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday to Saturday, while other current listings show broader hours. It is therefore sensible to confirm the opening schedule before starting the journey.

How to Reach Longewala War Memorial from Jaisalmer
Longewala is approximately 110–125 km from Jaisalmer, depending on the route and destination point. The journey normally takes around 2.5 to 3 hours by road.
By Car : The easiest way to visit is by private car or taxi from Jaisalmer. The usual road journey passes through the desert landscape towards the Longewala border area. Because public transport options are limited, a private vehicle is the most convenient choice for tourists.
By Taxi with Driver : Hiring a car with a local driver is a comfortable option, especially for families and groups. A driver familiar with the border region can also help plan the journey around other nearby attractions.
