Nathmal Ki Haveli is one of the most beautiful heritage attractions in Jaisalmer, famous for its detailed yellow sandstone carvings, elegant balconies, decorative windows and fascinating history. Located in the old city near Jaisalmer Fort, the haveli gives visitors a close look at the artistic and architectural traditions of 19th-century Rajasthan.

History of Nathmal Ki Haveli
Nathmal Ki Haveli was built in 1885 during the reign of Maharawal Beri Sal. It was commissioned as the residence of Diwan Mohata Nathmal, who served as the Prime Minister of the Jaisalmer state. The building reflects the wealth and status of important officials during the princely period of Jaisalmer. One of the most interesting stories associated with the haveli concerns its architects, Hathi and Lulu, two brothers who worked on different sections of the building. According to the popular account, they worked independently from opposite sides. As a result, the two sides appear similar at first glance but contain subtle differences in their carvings and decorative details. This unusual feature has become one of Nathmal Ki Haveli's most distinctive characteristics.

The haveli is constructed mainly from the famous golden-yellow sandstone of Jaisalmer. Its architecture combines Rajput, Rajasthani and Islamic influences, creating a distinctive fusion of styles. The façade features beautifully carved jharokhas, arches, balconies, pillars and latticework. Two large sandstone elephant sculptures stand at the entrance, adding grandeur to the building. Inside, visitors can see decorative paintings, stone carvings and traditional architectural details. The courtyards and jharokhas were also practical features, helping with ventilation and providing shaded spaces in Jaisalmer's hot desert climate.

The sandstone contains delicate floral patterns, animals, decorative motifs and geometric designs. The jharokhas and jali work are particularly impressive. These traditional features combine beauty with practical purposes such as airflow, shade and privacy. The two elephant sculptures at the entrance are also popular photography subjects. Nathmal Ki Haveli is also interesting because it remains partly connected with a living residential setting rather than being simply an empty monument. Some sections may have restricted access, so visitors should respect private areas and follow local instructions.

Best Time to Visit Nathmal Ki Haveli
The best time to visit Nathmal Ki Haveli is generally October to March, when the weather in Jaisalmer is more comfortable for walking around the old city. November to February is particularly pleasant for combining the haveli with Jaisalmer Fort, Patwon Ki Haveli, markets and other nearby attractions. For a more comfortable sightseeing experience, morning hours are a good choice. The softer light also brings out the details of the sandstone carvings. Late afternoon can also be attractive for photography as the golden sandstone takes on warmer tones. During April to June, temperatures can become extremely high, so sightseeing is better planned for the morning or late afternoon. July to September can be quieter, although weather conditions can be less predictable.

How to Reach Nathmal Ki Haveli
Nathmal Ki Haveli is located in Sadar Bazar in the heart of Jaisalmer's old city. It is close to Jaisalmer Fort and other famous havelis, making it easy to include in a heritage sightseeing tour.
By Road: Jaisalmer is well connected by road with Jodhpur and other major cities of Rajasthan. Private cars, taxis and buses are available. If you are travelling with a car and driver, you can reach the old-city area and continue on foot where the lanes become narrow.
By Train: Jaisalmer Railway Station is around 2 km from Nathmal Ki Haveli. From the station, you can take an auto-rickshaw or taxi to the old city and walk the remaining distance.
By Air: Jaisalmer Airport is the nearest airport. Another option for travellers with limited flight connectivity is Jodhpur Airport, followed by a road journey to Jaisalmer.
